Evan Behrens, AB’92
Evan Behrens recently made a $100,000 pledge in support of student programs in the College, in addition to his regular annual gift of $25,000 to the College Fund. Why I give to the University of Chicago
I think supporting the University is important because the quality of the education it offers and its contribution to the community and the world are immense. I think the institution as a whole collectively does a lot for the common good. The impact the University has had on the quality of life across the board is dramatic. It’s an important institution and it deserves support for that reason.
How I support the University
I’ve worked to raise awareness of the current capital campaign by serving on the New York Chicago Initiative Launch Committee. A few years ago, I helped organize the Class of 1992 10th Reunion as a member of the Reunion Committee. I also give young graduates of the College professional advice as a Career Advising and Planning Services Alumni Contact Volunteer.
I have made an annual gift to the College every year for almost ten years. I recently made a larger gift in support of student programs at the College.
Why I think gifts for scholarships are important
A number of people who go to Chicago are not as fortunate as I was. I think access to a Chicago education should remain open to anyone who is capable and qualified, regardless of their ability to pay. It’s important to the quality of the education offered at the University that financial aid is a priority.
What I learned at Chicago
I learned a lot of skills at Chicago. It furthered my ability to think critically, to question, to analyze. I use it every day in what I do in my business, I use it to understand and analyze. The quality of the classes that I was able to take and the quality of the faculty were great. I was fortunate that I had a lot of small classes taught by senior faculty and had a great working relationship with them. I think that’s unique to the institution.
Why Alumni should get involved
If you appreciate the quality of the institution and what the institution did for you, you owe it to future students to support Chicago so that the same great education is available to other people. Getting involved means that the University needs your financial support and your active involvement. The only way your voice is heard is if you really get involved.
