Why scholarship support is valuable
Scholarships are valuable because they are accompanied by recognition and appreciation. They remind the recipient that in this world there are still those who highly value hard work and intellectual curiosity, and this drives him or her to continue steadfastly on the road to success. For me personally, this means that I must in turn invest my time and talents in the lives of those around me, because I recognize the impact that the selfless contributions of others have made in my life, and I would be remiss not to do for others what has been done for me.
Why I chose Chicago
I chose the University of Chicago because it stood out from all the other schools that I considered. When I visited campus, I got the impression that learning actually happened here, and not just a regurgitation of facts. When I sat in on classes during my visit, I found that the material was engaging and the students had a thirst for knowledge. I also got a sense of community here at the U of C that I didn’t find anywhere else. Being a city boy, I also wanted an urban campus, and what better place is there than Chicago?
Plans for the future
My plans for the future are to maximize my utility subject to what will hopefully be a continually outward-shifting budget constraint, while simultaneously maximizing my enjoyment of life. (That’s econ-speak for “I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life yet, but hopefully it will be enjoyable and perhaps lucrative, with an emphasis on the former.”)
About myself
I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am the oldest of four children, three boys and one girl. When I’m not in classes, I sing in an a cappella group (Voices in Your Head), direct the campus gospel choir (Soul Umoja), and participate in the Prospective Students Advisory Committee, Organization of Black Students, and Maroon Key Society. Oh, and occasionally I sleep.
